The Editor of The Pelican magazine is looking for photographs that show ‘real’ life at Brighton College over the decades. The College Archive is full of the official portraits of rugby teams, school prefects, houses and even the Masters’ Common Room, but the most interesting images are those that capture the more informal moments –whether taking time out of lessons or looking in on major occasions, they preserve moments in time. Do you have photographs from your time at Brighton College that you’d allow to be published as part of a new section of The Pelican, entitled Memory Lane? If so, you can either scan the photograph and email it to us with your name, House and years and a brief explanation of what’s going on in the photograph. Alternatively, you can load the images to a disc or a memory stick and send them to the OBA Office at Brighton College.

The chapel was full to capacity for Service of Music and Readings for Remembrance Sunday.
Parents, pupils, and many Old Brightonians came to listen to the roll call of those who died in World War 2, to observe the Silence and to hear the choir sing the Faure Requiem. The readings, which concentrated on the disabling effects of war, ranged from Wilfred Owen to a soldier engaged in Afghanistan. Any parent who was unable to attend, but would like a copy of the service booklet, should contact the Deputies' PA, Louise Moore.

On 27 September 1859 the first service was held in the college chapel (smaller then than it is now); and on Friday 2nd October 2009 a service was held to commemorate its 150th anniversary.
College pupils were joined by about 100 visitors, including clergy from the diocese, former chaplains, one of whom joined the college in 1950, ordained Old Brightonians and former heads, staff and governors.

A plaque has been erected in the Sammy Woods Pavilion to honour the enormous contribution of Geoff Lees, a former House Master of Aldrich, accomplished sportsman and great friend to many Old Brightonians. A number of Association members have already seen the plaque but next time you are a spectator at a game on the Home Ground, please do spare a moment to pop into the Pavilion and see it. |

Warmest congratulations to the College Chamber Choir who performed excellently before a packed house at the Glorious Venice concert (St Bartholomew's Church, Saturday 24th October). Joining three long established chamber choirs and a quartet of recently graduated professional soloists, the college musicians contributed fully to a programme of complex Venetian choral music by Monteverdi and the Gabriellis (Giovanni & Andrea).

I am delighted to send you details of this year's GCSE results from Brighton College - the best results in the school's history, with 50 pupils achieving nothing less than an A grade. The highlights include four sets of twins and a boy who moved to the school in Year 9 "to be himself" and clocked up 11 A*s including Classical Greek.

I am sure you are justly proud of your old school, as we are of you. If you have not been back in a while, please consider coming in and seeing all that is familiar - and new - about the place. This profile from The Daily Telegraph may provide further temptation. Should you be considering where to send your children (or grand-children) for their education, you may like to register for the forthcoming Open Mornings later this year.
