Since leaving Brighton College last summer, Jack Maughan (H. 2007-09), Jamie Proctor (S. 2004-09) and Bradley Vanstone (S. 2004-09) have been planning the trip of a life time. The three 19-year-old gap year students are on a mission to drive from Brighton to India. It's the best - and toughest - school trip ever!
Along the way they are doing voluntary teaching at schools in Romania, India and Sri Lanka all of which have strong on going relationships with Brighton College. The charities are; the Wishing Well Charity in Romania which the College has supported for several decades. Wings of Hope which the College has recently begun to aid through the Wings of Hope Achievement Award. Wings of Hope have a school in Malawi and Pondicherry in Southern India, they aim to provide the best possible schooling for children who cannot afford to learn. Finally, Extra Cover whom the College has aided since the tragic tsunami in 2003. On this adventure of a lifetime they want to give something back to the communities they are visiting and are looking for sponsors who want to join them on their amazing journey; they need equipment to kit out their Mitsubishi for the long journey, and this is where the members of the OBA may be able to help. As part of their attempts to raise awareness for the trip they broke the Guinness World Record for the longest game of croquet ever. The event was held at Brighton College between 29th January and 30th January.
Jack, Jamie & Bradley played the traditional hoop and mallet game from 4pm throughout the night, without sleep or rest, until at least 4pm the following day at their old College, despite what were terrible weather conditions. Friends, family and sponsors encouraged the three fundraisers from dusk till dawn as they raised money for their chosen charity. ‘We wanted to choose something that would capture people’s imagination, and show true grit’ says Lindfield’s Jack Maughan. ‘So we took a traditional, leisurely past time and turned on in its head, setting ourselves an extreme test of endurance for a great cause.’ Jamie and Bradley are not unaccustomed to unusual charity fundraising; in March 2009 they completed a London to Brighton triathlon wearing only thongs.
The trio need enthusiastic sponsorship and support, both from companies and individuals, in order to make The Great School Trip as successful as possible in its charitable aims.
