Gavin Henderson was Artistic Director of Brighton Festival from 1984-94. He was born in Brighton in 1948, and still lives there. He attended Brighton College and Brighton College of Art (now subsumed in the University of Brighton, of which he was Governor from 1988-1995) and has an honorary degree from the University of Sussex. Gavin Henderson is chairman of the Regency Society of Brighton and Hove and of The Brighton Youth Orchestra Trust. He is also a trustee of The West Pier and is President of Brighton Orpheus Choir and Springboard – The Competitive Music Festival.
He is founding Chairman of the National Foundation for Youth Music (now known as Youth Music) an appointment made personally by the then Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Chris Smith MP.
Gavin Henderson is also Artistic Director of Dartington International Summer School, and in 2003 was elected President of the Brussels based European Festivals Association. From 1994-1999 he was a member of the Arts Council of England and Chair of its Music Panel until 2003.
