"The gardens at Gravetye Manor are a very special place and can be considered amongst the most influential in English gardening history. Summer 2010 saw the appointment of Tom Coward as Head Gardener. Having worked for 3 years alongside Fergus Garrett at Great Dixter, his experience has proved second to none in tackling this project."
Brighton Drinks at the Pub du Vin was wonderfully attended last week, and a convivial evening was had by all. A large party went on to have curry, which seems to be a developing theme of late! There were so many OBs crowded into the bar, that we didn't quite catch everyone's name, but we did promise to organise another evening soon, so watch this space. Suggestions for suitable venues should be sent to

Le Café Anglais proved a spectacular setting for the Pioneers Club London Luncheon where Old Brightonians gathered together on Thursday 8th December. Friends were reunited for our gathering, and many a peel of laughter was to be heard over the wonderful array of photographs brought in.
OBs enjoyed a beautiful morning at Gravetye Manor Gardens on Friday 16th September with inspiring Head Gardener Tom Coward.
Tom gave an impassioned tour of the estate, and its wonderful Autumn colours, though he did note that if we retuned in the next few weeks that the colours would be even more spectacular as the trees deepened in hue. Famous for being created by William Robinson, arguably one of England’s greatest gardeners, Tom has been working hard to breathe new life into the gardens following some years of neglect. He has done this to the most wonderful effect, and it was a pleasure to listen to him speak so knowledgeably about Robinson and his theories, and also on the garden itself and how they have experimented in the last year with planting and design.
There are certain places that are heavy with the memory of those that have gone before. Half echoes of the past, like voices heard down a corridor, far off but still present. RMA Sandhurst is such a place, bustling as it is with the life of the current cadets it is also a testament to all those that have gone before them, not just in the memorials that stand proudly in the grounds but the whole place resonates with the remembrance of those that have passed through the gates. It is both poignant and proud, imposing and impressive.
The great risk of turning up early or on-time for these gatherings is that you are inevitably faced with the prospect of some time alone at the bar looking pretty sad… or worse still being stuck with some frightful character whose company quickly becomes tedious.
We couldn’t have asked for better weather for the Brighton College Golf Day Friday 30th September 2011. With a back drop of the beautiful Albourne Countryside, Old Brightonians and parents headed to the fairway for a day at Singing Hills Golf Course.
The first City & Finance networking drinks went off well last week although apologies must be extended to the OBs that we lost along the way, as the venue (Rocket, City) was bursting at the seams on a busy Thursday evening.
The Development and Alumni Relations Office's primary role is to support the Head Master and Governors in realising the long-term plans of the school, by raising non-fee income, and by building a network of strong relationships among parents, staff, Old Brightonians and other friends and supporters.
