Pat Lyford (C. 1949-55)
Wimbledon 2000
Watching the Wimbledon Parade of Champions and seeing Jaroslav Drobny took
me right back to the Men's Finals in 1954, squatting on the floor in the
Chichester Housemaster's lounge and watching the match on Bill Lloyd's
television. This was no ordinary television set - Bill had made it
himself.
The components of the massive receiver covered half the floor of the
lounge
and projected an almost visible picture onto the wall. The picture was
rather trapezoidal in shape which made the player on the right of the
picture half as big as the player on the left (or was it the other way
round?)! But still we did watch the match! Thanks for the memory.
Incidentally, Drobny beat Ken Rosewall 13:11 4:6 6:2 9:7.
On the subject of memories, last September was the 50th anniversary of my
entering Chichester, along with Michael Rees, Roger Adams, Michael Cardew,
Tim McCabe, Peter Dowding, Paul Frances and Tim Bavin. Tim Bavin has
entered
a monastery in Alton. Tim McCabe is now retired and living in Italy. Peter
Dowding lives in Canada. I have not been able to trace Paul Frances. What
of
him, Michael Rees, Roger Adams, and Michael Cardew? I would very much like
to hear from them.
