• OB Cricketer Cup Season 2004

    Tuesday, 28 September 2004
The Cricketer Cup is now in its 38th Year and is the premier Public Schools Old Boys cricket competition. Although the Old Brightonians won the competition back in 1969 with the legendary ABD Parsons, it has been dominated by the likes of Tonbridge, Malvern, Oundle, Charterhouse and Harrow. At the beginning of this season we were sitting 13th in the national rankings. Having reached the ¼ final stage 8 times in the last 20 years the college hoped this year to proceed further and perhaps emulate the heroes of 69.

Gosh what a day! The first skirmisher car of the mighty OBs trundled through the wrought iron gates of the Richmond Athletic Ground to quite a magnificent sight. The time was around 10am, the air was already warm and clear, the September sun was scorching. Everywhere were half-dressed young men huddled in small groups, tossing balls around a select inner circle of public school chaps, eager to go to war with historical rivals. All the big names were there: Wellington, Millfield, Rugby, Abingdon (who incidentally have marvellous pink and white shirts), Marlborough, Bryanston, Radley, Harrow, Tonbridge and, of course, Brighton College.

We have had a busier year than usual with four main events. In the 1st round of the Halford sadly Hewitt on a lovely bright and breezy day at Royal St. George’s, Sandwich we went down to Mill Hill 3½ - 1½. In the ensuing Plate competition we went down to Sherborne 3—0, though all the matches were tightly fought. Our 2004 campaign sees us start up against St. Paul’s at Sandwich at 8.00am on Thursday 1st April.

Where do you start when you describe the trip of a lifetime? Before the beginning of course...

The tournament schedule was studied and after the June matches against the Southern Hemisphere nations by general consensus the form guide dictated that we would breeze through the qualifiers and eventually meet New Zealand in the final. So to the planning of the trip. The first obstacle of persuading the wife that this was a once in a lifetime chance of experiencing the World Cup down under, with the added bonus of England going all the way, was not as hard as I expected and the all clear was relatively painless, although I knew that brownie points would have to be earned! However work commitments would only allow me to be away for three weeks and the tournament would run for six weeks. Dilemma time.

The Cricketer Cup draw was not kind to the OBs this year with a home draw against Sherborne Pilgrims. Sherborne batted and made a respectable 240. With several new faces in the side a new confidence abounded and we knocked them off for 4 with 9 overs remaining. 50’s came from Chettleburgh, Woodbridge & Burton.

In the second round we travelled to Bradfield for the first time. The OBs batted first and Gates struck a magnificent 100. He was finely supported by Appleton and their opening stand yielded 170 runs. This enabled the middle order to go berserk and we rocketed to 320 for 4.

Off then to Harrow for the quarter finals for the third year in succession. Could we reach the semis for the first time since the mid 70s? Unfortunately, we were completely out-played by Harrow, who went on to the final.

Cricket week was a great success this year with several leavers from recent years making appearances.Young blades such as Grammer, Wood, Burton, Waller, Spencer, Bidwell & Woodbridge carry the flag and all produced exciting performances during the season. Narrow defeats against the Martlets, St. James & Lancing were all exciting games and the victory against Malvern was the first for years.

My thanks go to Peter Withers for all his help and also to Sam Chettleburgh for captaining the side. Thanks also to Fred and his team on the ground staff and James and the catering team. Finally, congratulations to Matthew Prior on winning the County Championship with Sussex.

  • Another very successful year for netball with three teams - U13, U14 and U19 - winning their Sussex Cup competitions; the U15s narrowly lost in the final and the U16s were losing semi-finalists. Unfortunately, the Independent Schools' Tournaments were cancelled because of the weather and so we were denied the opportunity to really finish on a high.
  • Former Grand Prix racer and Old Brightonian Jonathan Palmer has agreed to purchase the four race circuits owned by Brands Hatch Circuits Limited: Brands Hatch, Cadwell Park, Oulton Park and Snetterton, for an undisclosed sum.

Jonathan and his two partners, John Britten and Peter Ogden, will own and control MotorSport Vision (MSV) – a new company established for the purposes of owning and developing the four circuits.

  • It was no surprise that we came across the expected teething problems that herald any inaugural match - i.e. we didn't know each other, everybody seemed to have the same preferred position, and nobody wanted to put herself forward to organise such a motley crew. Therefore, going down 3-17 in the first quarter to an extremely talented Brighton College 1st VII seemed inevitable.

The Old Brightonians played Mill Hill in the first round of this year's Halford Hewitt, losing by 3.5 to 1.5. In the ensuing PLate competition, we lost to Sherborne 3-0, although the games were closer than the scoreline suggests.
