Report: Brighton College Hong Kong Dinner – Saturday 15th December 2012

Globe trotting Headmaster Richard Cairns clearly has taken a shine to Hong Kong, Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China. No sooner had he hosted an excellent evening at the China Club in late September than he was planning a return visit in December! This came to pass and we convened for dinner in the Peking Room at the American Club in Central.

Sunday Times Top 100 Schools table 2012-13

The Sunday Times has published its latest table of the UK's Top 400 schools and I thought you would be interested to see the attached extract. The table places Brighton College as the second highest performing co-educational school in Britain, the fifth highest performing boarding school in the country and the only school in Britain to have improved its academic performance every single year for six years. It also places the College above many of the country's most selective schools. Brighton is the only Sussex school in the Top 100.

James Chisholm (D. U6th) named 'Player of the Month' by Rugby World

Congratulations to James Chisholm, (U6th, Durnford), who has been named Canterbury 'Player of the Month' in the December issue of the highly influential magazine, Rugby World. James, who captains the 1st XV, is also the England U18 No 8.

Diamond Jubilee Pavilion Celebrations

Once again the sun shone on the Diamond Jubilee Pavilion as the Head Master welcomed some 100 donors and supporters of the project to enjoy an afternoon of sport, on Saturday 8th September, at the recently re-named Jubilee Ground. Some had not visited the ground at East Brighton Park for many years – 72 years in the case of Old Brightonian Richard Batt (H 1936-40), who joined the College shortly after the school acquired the playing fields in 1926. Others were more recent and frequent spectators, being current parents at the school, and some admitted that their donations were made from 'enlightened self-interest' as they celebrated the fact that the Diamond Jubilee Pavilion would afford some welcome shelter from the elements on rather less glorious days!

A record set of results in 2012!

Not to be outdone by the record-breaking Upper Sixth, our GCSE candidates have also enjoyed a record set of results. More than 90% of grades were at A* or A (those grades demanded by leading universities) and, astonishingly, the most common grade of all was an A*.

Two Brighton College buildings receive prestigious RIBA architectural awards

Both the Simon Smith Building and the Skidelsky Building last week won highly prestigious awards from The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) for architectural excellence. At their annual awards ceremony, each of the College's most recent buildings won the RIBA's South East Downland regional award for outstanding architecture. Ten awards were made in total out of 179 submissions.

Noah Makower (L5th, School House) has had his talent as an artist recognised by the Royal Academy: one of his paintings, titled 'Pastoral Scene', has been accepted into this year's Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy.
