"Farewell The Trumpet" - a concert for Gavin Henderson CBE (Le. 1960-65)

BREMF Trustee Gavin Henderson CBE (Le. 1960-65) has been ‘resident trumpeter’ at St Bartholomew’s Church for fifty years; to celebrate this golden jubilee, and to mark Gavin’s retirement from playing, a concert is being given to raise funds for endowment of the music at St Bart’s – the trumpets especially! Those taking part are giving their services for a programme that is all Purcell.

Gavin Henderson CBE (Le. 1960-65), Principal of The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, grew up in Brighton - where his first work in the theatre comprised holiday jobs backstage at the 'weekly rep' on the Palace Pier, and in pantomime at Wimbledon.

The Old Brightonians Luncheon 2014

The inaugural President's Luncheon was held on Thursday 6th March at The Travellers Club, Pall Mall. The Club was founded, in 1819, 'for gentlemen who had travelled out of the British Isles to a distance of at least five hundred miles from London in a direct line'.

If ever a venue was most likely to draw a big attendance for one of the regular OB London Drinks evenings it was surely the Paramount Sky Bar on the 32nd floor of London’s Centre Point Tower. The attendee list was appropriately over-subscribed – a terrific indicator for the New Year.

The Old Brightonians Vice-Presidents Luncheon was held on Thursday 7th March in the splendid Library of The Army & Navy Club, Pall Mall. Our usual host, Peter Miller (C. 1945-1949) sadly could not join us as he is re-cooperating after a major operation. However, our thoughts were very much with him and he was duly very much talked of and missed by the Old Brightonians in attendance.

"Picasso At The Theatre" - Burstow Gallery, 1982

Prior to a recent show in London, Pablo Picasso’s “Le Train Bleu” curtain was last seen at Brighton College as part of the Brighton Festival of 1982. The 10.3 x 11.7m curtain formed the centrepiece of The Burstow Gallery’s “Picasso and The Theatre” exhibition organised by Gavin Henderson (L.1960-65 and later overall Director of The Festival) and assisted by my father, Nick Bremer (Director of Art 1969-2000). The show attracted 7,200 visitors to the College – “The publicity is beyond price” Headmaster Bill Blackshaw proudly told the Council.
