REPORT: London Drinks, January 2006

The first OB gathering of 2006 was an all male affair that in terms of College attendance spanned over 50 years!

As numbers go, the evening started off slowly, but built to a comfortable throng of 25 or so Old Brightonians. When I arrived shortly after 6pm David Gold (S. 1986-91) and Adam Belson (R. 1979-84) were the sole attendees – apparently trying to convince a sceptical barman that this evening would be worth his while...

President's Annual Report 2005

This has been a year of innovation for the Association, especially in the way we communicate with our members and the College community. The Association website, which is now updated almost daily, has been totally revamped with the addition of a community notice board, photo gallery, and an expanded OB Hall of Fame. We are registering an average of more than 150 hits a day on the website and many OBs are emerging from the woodwork to provide us with news. Going forwards, we are developing a new membership page, and looking for greater expansion of the Directory of OB Businesses and Services. My thanks go to our web designer, Alex Bremer (R. 1979-83) for all his hard work and constant enthusiasm which goes well beyond the call of duty.

REPORT: OBA Annual Dinner 2005 - "Two Golds, a Silver and the Seldon babes"

Twenty five years is a long time but what about the 1949 PE team? They were there too and so were quite a few of those who were only yesterday (as it were) walking across the quad without a (real) care in the world. For those of us celebrating a silver anniversary of leaving the College it was for most the first time we had returned for a great many years.

REPORT: OB Day 2005

In spite of all the rain dances and prayers for divine intervention to assist the England cricketers at the Oval, Brighton College was blessed with warm sunshine for OB Day, which was fitting because for some, it was their first visit in many a year.

REPORT: OBA Sponsored College Rugby and Netball Tour of South Africa 2005

All the efforts in planning and training were put under threat by doubts over our departure day due to the strike by South African Airways. A phone call at 11am on the morning of departure gave us the go ahead. The tour was up and running. However, another obstacle awaited us is Johannesburg in the form of passport control, which took two and half hours to clear. This put enormous pressure on catching our connecting flight to Cape Town and only the pleadings of an old man and the size of the party allowed us to win the day and board the plane half an hour late.

REPORT: A Celebration of 150 years of College Cricket

150 not out and still with plenty of gas in the tank would be the best way to present Brighton College Cricket today. We as a school have had an enviable record in cricket since the early 1980’s and it is great to see that this still the case in 2005.

REPORT: Touring Car Racing at Brands Hatch

It had been some considerable time since the College had heard from one of her most famous sons, former Grand Prix racer Jonathan Palmer (A. 1969-74). In fact, to my recollection the last visit he paid to the school was when I had invited him to talk to the school’s Auto Club back in 1982! We were therefore particularly delighted when Jonathan contacted our President to invite the Association to enjoy a day’s hospitality at Brands Hatch. We were offered a large suite high above the main startline straight offering a magnificent view of every corner of the circuit.

Netball Report, 2005

Our netball teams continue to achieve considerable success: we were the only school to qualify for the Sussex Cup Finals and the Sussex Independent Schools’ Finals in all age groups. The U15s achieved the treble by winning the King Edward’s School Invitation Tournament, the Sussex Cup and S.I.S.N.A. Tournament.

Old Girls on the Ball

It was nice to see so many familiar faces returning to play Old Girls' netball in the matches against the College's senior teams on Saturday 18 September. However, the fact that the 'Dream Team', that was 4th in the National Finals of 2002, had turned out in force was a little daunting for our U16 VII and 1st VII.

OB Annual Dinner 2004

The association’s dinner this year was a select affair. As if consciously to complement last year’s, when 30 years of coeducation was celebrated, an overwhelmingly male party gathered together in the Dining Hall on a cold November night. It was a most convivial evening of good wines, an excellent dinner, and of course one in which nostalgic reminiscences hung in the air like cigar smoke.

The OB trip to Ypres, 2004

Brighton College has benefited in many ways from the leadership and vision of Anthony Seldon. One of the most remarkable innovations he has brought to pupils, parents and OBs alike are his now legendary visits to the Great War battlefields.

OB Cricketer Cup Season 2004

The Cricketer Cup is now in its 38th Year and is the premier Public Schools Old Boys cricket competition. Although the Old Brightonians won the competition back in 1969 with the legendary ABD Parsons, it has been dominated by the likes of Tonbridge, Malvern, Oundle, Charterhouse and Harrow. At the beginning of this season we were sitting 13th in the national rankings. Having reached the ¼ final stage 8 times in the last 20 years the college hoped this year to proceed further and perhaps emulate the heroes of 69.

REPORT: 20 year reunion for the leavers of 1984

As with all accounts of such gatherings, I must open my report with a pathetically grateful nod to whoever arranged for the promised rain to hold off (which meant that Joey Appleton’s (D.1979-84) hair stayed fabulous all day!).

REPORT: The Cronk-Cunis U21 Festival 2004

Gosh what a day! The first skirmisher car of the mighty OBs trundled through the wrought iron gates of the Richmond Athletic Ground to quite a magnificent sight. The time was around 10am, the air was already warm and clear, the September sun was scorching. Everywhere were half-dressed young men huddled in small groups, tossing balls around a select inner circle of public school chaps, eager to go to war with historical rivals. All the big names were there: Wellington, Millfield, Rugby, Abingdon (who incidentally have marvellous pink and white shirts), Marlborough, Bryanston, Radley, Harrow, Tonbridge and, of course, Brighton College.

OB Girls' Netball - Inaugural Match 2004

Another very successful year for netball with three teams - U13, U14 and U19 - winning their Sussex Cup competitions; the U15s narrowly lost in the final and the U16s were losing semi-finalists. Unfortunately, the Independent Schools' Tournaments were cancelled because of the weather and so we were denied the opportunity to really finish on a high.

REPORT: Vice-Presidents’ Luncheon - July 2005

The inaugural Vice-Presidents’ Luncheon was held on Thursday 14 July at the Army & Navy Club, courtesy of Peter Miller (C. 1945-49). In spite of the chaos caused to the London transport system by the events of the previous week, all fourteen guests made it in time, many observing the 2 minute silent tribute to the victims of the London terrorist outrage en route.

REPORT: Brighton College 160th Anniversary May Ball

It may have taken 160 years but Brighton College finally knows how to throw a really good party! After a rainy start to the day it was decided to abandon the planned Reception on the Lawns, opting for the safety of the Great Hall. Around 450 guests filed past the ‘living statue’ to enjoy a glass or two of Champagne as the College Swing Band demonstrated why it is in such high demand. Street entertainers mingled among the dinner jackets and gowns to create a truly joyous atmosphere.

OBA London Drinks May 2004

I am rarely asked by the manager to leave a public bar before closing time but I am pleased to report that on this occasion I did not disgrace myself! When I reserved a space at one of London’s newest trendy bars I saw no problem with the condition that we should make way for another party at 9:30pm. These informal gatherings usually attract just a few London OBs in search of someone to share a pint with after work and all have usually gone home by 8pm.

Eyewitness: 2003 Rugby World Cup

Where do you start when you describe the trip of a lifetime? Before the beginning of course... The tournament schedule was studied and after the June matches against the Southern Hemisphere nations by general consensus the form guide dictated that we would breeze through the qualifiers and eventually meet New Zealand in the final. So to the planning of the trip. The first obstacle of persuading the wife that this was a once in a lifetime chance of experiencing the World Cup down under, with the added bonus of England going all the way, was not as hard as I expected and the all clear was relatively painless, although I knew that brownie points would have to be earned! However work commitments would only allow me to be away for three weeks and the tournament would run for six weeks. Dilemma time.

REPORT: OBA Annual Dinner to Celebrate 30 Years of Girls at Brighton College

More than 80 ‘old girls’ celebrated 30 years of co-education at Brighton College at a special dinner on Saturday 29th November 2003. Speakers included Bill Blackshaw, the former Headmaster who introduced girls to the College and Lucinda Harris (F. 1973-75) who was one of the first girls to join the school. Jane Haviland (F. 1979-81), currently President of the Old Brightonians Association and the first lady elected to this post, also spoke.

OB Girls' Netball - Inaugural Match 2003

It was no surprise that we came across the expected teething problems that herald any inaugural match - i.e. we didn't know each other, everybody seemed to have the same preferred position, and nobody wanted to put herself forward to organise such a motley crew. Therefore, going down 3-17 in the first quarter to an extremely talented Brighton College 1st VII seemed inevitable.

OBRFC Dinner & Dance 2002

A pre-season rugby day, followed by a dinner and dance in the evening, was held at the College on Saturday 31 August 2002. Its purpose was to celebrate 30 years of rugby under the tutalege of John Pope. John has relinquished his title of 'Master in charge of rugby' to Richard Halsall and it seemed an appropriate way to recognise John's contribution to rugby at the College.

OB Cricket Summer 2002

This was an eventful year for the OB cricket team. We drew Radley Rangers in the 1st round of the Cricketer Cup, playing them for the first time in the competition. After a confident start we made only 200 odd and with Hutton of Radley on 50 and going well we were delighted to snap him up the ball before tea. Perhaps surprised is a better word than delighted here since it was Chris Sweet (D. 1983-88), keeping wicket, who snaffled him. Nevertheless, Radley lost their way and the experience of the OBs saw us home.

San Francisco Reunion 2002

The 2nd OBA US Dinner was held in the Pacific Room at the Carnelian Room which is in the City's Bank of America building. Ingram Losner (D. 1973-1978) organised a sensational dinner in an extraordinary setting. The Pacific Room was for those of us not used to eating dinner on the 52nd floor of a skyscraper quite the most wonderful experience! The view alone was worth the trip...
