REPORT: The Cricketer Cup 2015

1st Round Away to Harrow Wanderers.

The Old Brightonians travelled to Harrow School for the 1st round of the Cricketer Cup. We have not played at home for several seasons now, but that is the luck of the draw. We have a long history of cricket against Harrow both at school level and in the OB's Cup. Our last two visits have been unsuccessful against The Wanderers. One sticks out in my mind in particular when we lost to them in the semi-finals of the competition back in the early noughties, the furthest we have reached in the Cup since we won the competition back in the 60's.

The Cricketer Cup First Draw

Old Brightonians 103 for 3, lost to Oundle Rovers 104 for 3. Despite the drought of the early summer, the day of the first round of the Cricketer Cup dawned with rain, that wet sort of rain that continues all day. Undaunted by the wet conditions, eleven Old Brightonians travelled to Oundle for the fixture. It was decided by both teams that only a ten over match in the rain was possible, not ideal but a better alternative to replaying the game the following weekend.

Memories of Old Brightonian Cricket

In 1969 the Old Brightonians were invited to take part in the Public Schools knockout competition run by the Cricketer and sponsored by Mercier Champagne. Nobody expected very much from us. We had a good side but not a great one, but we did have self belief and enthusiasm. The first match was against the favourites, the Old Tonbridgians. This was the closest game we played. With the scores equal we won through to the next round, having lost fewer wickets.
