Spring finally seems to have arrived and it’s great to see the College looking so colourful, if slightly disrupted by the building work in the Woolton Quad for the new Visual Arts Centre which is to be named in honour of the late Old Brightonian Lord Alexander.
Another Old Brightonian whose untimely and premature death affected many of us was of course Joe Scourfield. I am delighted that the OBA was able to contribute to the appeal for a memorial in the College Chapel and the fund which has been established in his name to help BC families affected by the severe illness of a son or daughter. The fund remains open for OBs and others who wish to contribute and I would invite you to contact me to obtain details of how you can help.
As always the OBA calendar is hectic and following the success of the London Drinks we had the Under 30s drinks in Hove which to be honest was a bit light on attendees. This was surprising as more than 100 people had expressed interest and although by nature these events are totally informal we had thought we might have more than 6 people there! I’m keen for younger OBs to use the Association as a resource whether it’s to find work or socialise, play football or advertise their business. So we’ve started a debate on FaceBook and invite all under 30s - and the young at heart - to get stuck in and tell us what you want from us. Anything we can do, we will do.
But it’s not all about the young. The Pioneers Club is being launched on 25 September at Harry’s Restaurant in Hove. We called it the Pioneers Club because we felt the strength of the College and the alumni organisation has to be in large part thanks to those of a certain age who did so much in the past. I have thought for a long time there has been a big gap in the Association calendar for those over 60 who continue to live in Brighton & Hove, especially since the demise of the Sussex Branch some years ago. I hope this will be a way of filling that gap.
Tickets are going fast for the Commemoration Ball and Commemoration Day on 1 July has prompted a lot of interest. Please put it in your diary and make it a date! Ditto the Annual Dinner which is already at two thirds capacity. If you are a regular or a first timer, please don’t miss out, order your ticket today. Philip Robinson retired this Summer and this will be our tribute to him as well as his chance to dish the dirt after a long career spanning decades at BC!
Enjoy the Spring and please continue to support our activities. Your involvement is crucial - and appreciated.
