(Pictured left) Many congratulations to Emma Gutierrez-Waldron (Wi. 2009-17), who was recently named Liverpool City Council’s ‘Apprentice of the Year’ at their 2025 Staff Awards.

“It is an incredible honour to be recognised among so many talented and dedicated colleagues,” Emma said. “This award means a lot to me – transitioning from a STEM background into the world of project management and highways construction has been one of the most rewarding risks of my career so far.”

The accolade is not only a personal milestone, but also a testament to the strong support network at the council. Emma highlighted the vital role of mentorship in her development: “This is not only validation that I am heading in the right direction, but also a reflection of the support, mentorship, and opportunities I have received from the council and my team. I would like to specially mention my supervisor, Chris Parkes, my manager, Graham Martin, and everyone in my team for believing in me and helping me grow.”

Since joining the council, Emma has had the chance to contribute to innovative projects, including the Highways Decarbonisation Ecosystem – Liverpool Live Lab programme. Emma’s work has taken her beyond local boundaries, including a visit to COLAS’ lab in Paris.

Emma is an advocate for diversity and inclusion within the construction industry, representing women in construction and championing the importance of a more inclusive workforce.

Reflecting on her journey so far, she said, “Here’s to watering your grass, staying curious, and not being scared of falling over.”
