 900x1046 Finn Molly

University of Leeds undergraduate Finn Moll (Du. 2017-22), is preparing to take his research beyond the university setting and into one of the UK’s key environmental law forums, after being selected to speak at the UK Environmental Law Association’s Annual Conference this June.

Currently in his final year studying Law, Finn will present ideas developed through his dissertation, focusing on how the legal responsibilities of company directors could evolve in response to the growing urgency of climate change.

His work examines whether existing frameworks are fit for purpose in a rapidly changing world. In particular, he explores how corporate decision-making might better account for environmental impact, and what legal reform could help achieve that shift.

Finn’s interest in the subject was sparked by a landmark legal case brought by environmental organisation ClientEarth against Shell’s board of directors. The case raised fundamental questions about the extent to which company leaders can be held accountable for failing to address climate-related risks. Following its progress prompted Finn to look more closely at the broader legal landscape and the potential role of directors’ duties in driving change.

While his academic research has focused on analysing the current state of the law, his forthcoming conference presentation will take a more forward-looking approach, considering how legislation might develop to reflect modern environmental challenges.

Speaking at the conference will place Finn alongside legal practitioners, academics and policymakers working at the forefront of environmental law. He is particularly looking forward to engaging with others in the field and contributing to wider discussions about how legal systems can support more effective responses to climate change.

Finn is quick to acknowledge the role of his lecturers in helping him reach this stage. He credits his dissertation supervisor, Dr Jo Hawkins, for her guidance throughout the research process, as well as Dr Carrie Bradshaw for her support in preparing for the presentation itself.

Looking ahead, Finn hopes to build a career in environmental law, with a focus on using legal tools to address some of the most pressing global challenges. His selection to speak at this conference marks an important early step in that journey. Best of luck Finn!
