Freelance musical director and composer-lyricist Molly O’Gorman’s latest projects include an emerging musical director placement, a national tour and teaching at one of London’s leading drama schools.

This summer, Molly (Fe. 2015-17) will spend part of her time at Regent's Park Open Air Theatre, where she has joined the theatre’s Open Room programme as an emerging musical director. The initiative is designed to give early-career theatre-makers an insight into the workings of one of the UK’s best-known producing theatres, combining observation, mentoring and exposure to the theatre’s full summer season of rehearsals and productions. The programme is designed to nurture new artistic talent like Molly alongside its large-scale open-air productions.

Molly will then quickly put what she has learned into practice, as she is set to be the musical director for a touring open-air production of The Sword in the Stone. Produced by Cambridge Touring Productions, the family-friendly adaptation of the Arthurian legend will visit parks and gardens across the UK this summer.

Alongside her theatre work, Molly will also be teaching regular classes at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts - one of the UK’s leading drama schools - based in Peckham, south London. Mountview is particularly well known within the industry for its training in acting, musical theatre and actor musicianship.

The contrast with last summer is rather striking. For Molly, much of 2025 was spent premiering her one-woman musical, Can't Talk Right Now, at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and Camden Fringe festivals. This summer’s busy mix of touring, teaching and musical direction offers a snapshot of the variety that comes with freelance life in theatre, where artists often balance several productions, venues and creative roles at once. For Molly, it will mean moving constantly between rehearsal rooms, outdoor stages and classrooms, but she is not daunted in the least.

“It's exciting to have so many different hats and venues, and to be always learning and creating something new.” she said.
