Congratulations to Oli Varela (Ry. 2011-18), whose drag persona Flesh has been crowned the winner of RuPaul's Drag Race UK Season 8.
Having entered the competition as one of London's most celebrated drag performers, Flesh impressed throughout the series with her trademark blend of high-fashion glamour, creativity and performance skill. As we reported in the OB News back in September, Oli has spent the past seven years building a formidable reputation on the capital's drag scene, running the popular Heavenly Bodies show in Soho alongside drag sister and best friend, Bones.
Following an epic final lip-sync battle, RuPaul declared Flesh the winner and The UK's Next Drag Race Superstar. The reigning champion, Bones, handed over the crown and sceptre as Flesh claimed the title and £25,000 prize.
Reflecting on the victory, Flesh described the experience as "so surreal", adding: "The past year has brought so many of my dreams to life, it's hard not to believe that I have stopped living and entered into a dream. For now, all I can say is thank you."
It is wonderful to see Oli’s talent, creativity and hard work recognised on such a high-profile stage. Condragulations!
